Top Woodworking Safety Rules

Woodworking can be a safe and enjoyable hobby or vocation, IF you follow some very basic woodworking safety rules. All of the rules are common-sense ideas, but failure to follow these rules will greatly increase the chance of injury when working with your tools. The wood shop is not the place to be in a hurry or have an "it won't happen to me" attitude. Commit these ten rules to habit, and your woodworking experiences will be safer and much more enjoyable.

Proper use of Power DrillThe first and most important rule of woodworking is to wear appropriate safety equipment. While hearing protection is necessary for some very noisy tools such as routers and surface planers, and latex gloves may be necessary when applying finishes, there is no time in the wood shop that you should be without your safety glasses. Put them on when you enter the shop, and don't take them off until you leave. Your eyesight is too important to take chances.

Workshop Renos and Woodworking Tips

coffeeThat old saying that "necessity is the mother of invention" was never truer that doing home renovation projects or working in the workshop. As a rule I don't mind doing home reno projects, but I like to work at them at my own speed. This is because the always take at least four times longer for me to complete that what I calculated they would take. Not long ago, after having an "Energy Audit" done on our house, it was deemed that several areas of the house needed to be redone, including some previously un-insulated concrete walls and all the windows in house, to name only a couple of the projects.

Both of these projects required major renovation work to be done in my woodworking shop which meant it would be out of commission ... and guaranteed, for longer than I would expect, since two of the walls needed complete rebuilding, insulating and re-surfacing. I was fine with doing the work, and have done this kind of work before, but I am slow at it because I am not a pro at doing it.

This combined with the fact that the walls would need to have all pieces custom cut, and that I had to work around all the existing power and shop tools as there was no other place they could be stored. Next I knew would be the dredded re-surfacing ...

Everything was going fine until it came time to start installing the sheetrock or gypsum board. I had no problem putting it up, but I could never seem to find the screws, or when I did I was always running out of them. I tried using a puch apron but that was awkward and it made wonder what the pros do? I'm sure they must have some sort of a method? Every time I would install a new sheet, I would always be looking around for some screws to hold it in place while so I could go and get more screws to secure it to the wall. What I ended up doing was installing a strip of self-sticking velcro onto my drill-driver. On the exposed side, which was also sticky I stuck three little 1/2 inch round earth magnets. These magnets hold a LOT of sheetrock screws, so now finding them was easy. I wondered about the earth magents affecting the drills motor, so I placed it as far away fromt he motor as possible. I checked the magnets and found that they really have very little affect on anything unless they are tuching it, so their field of magnetism is very small, and not enough to penetrate the shell of the drill, and certainly not enough to worry about affecting a battery driven motor.

After using my driver with the magnets on it for a while, I started to realize just how handy this was. I often seem to be re-doing or un-doing something or other, and usually there are nuts and bolts and washers to worry about, not I just plunk them onto the magents and I know where they are. A very easy and simple way to keep track of drill-driver nuts, bolts, screws, washers and other connectors, and it's a simple easy way add productivty to your drills and drivers.

... and by the way, I did find out what the "Pros" do, apparently (I am told) they simply hold a fist full of screws in one hand and the drill in the other and with this method, they can plow through a sheetrock job in no time. I'm sure their dexterity with holding the screws and getting them ready would be something we would all love to achieve. Amazing what necessity achieves!!

Choose the Correct Saw Blade for Any Woodworking Task

Saw BladesWhen choosing a saw blade to make a cut on a particular piece of wood, the choice of blade will make certainly affect the finish of hte cut, which in turn will determine how much sanding you'll have to do to clean up the cut.

Like most woodworkers, I really don't enjoy sanding. It is often a tedious job, but every woodworker knows that the better job he does on the sanding, the better the finish on the project. With that in mind, using the right saw blade for the material being cut (and the direction of the cuts) can dramatically reduce the amount of sanding required.

Want to cut down on the amount of sanding you'll need to do on your projects? Learn how to select the proper saw blade for any task and you'll have far less work to do when it comes time to sand your project.

Stool: This is the easiest step that you can start for the initiation of your Woodworking Project. Just in case if this is your first attempt for making goods with wood, by making a table you can feel that all the faltering have gone that are related with making piece of furniture. Besides the accessibility of diverse varieties, we can here choose the simple one in which you have to collect three boards out of which two are for the legs and one for sitting. For additional support you can add slat in between the two legs. Making a stool with four legs is slightly perplexed.Table: For the intellect that a table acquires long legs than the stool there are some ramifications while making this. Also there requires some further retention for constancy. But similar to the stool there is also need of the same things that are flump and legs. Having all the Woodworking Projects that you can make for your house, table is the one in which your creativeness can be considered as there are diverse shapes of the table that can be seen like circular, rectangular and having the one elegant upper surface.Kid’s toy: As though there are things for the adults same are there for the kids. You can overfill your child with joy by making Woodwork Projects for them. Wooden toys are far better than the plastic toys and remote following toys. There is an expandable series of children toys that you can made yourself, but the choice is yours. The most convenient one is to make a wooden riding horse. Also you have to take care about rounding off the margins of these toys as sharp margins can abrade the skin of your child.

At last the conclusion is that you have to select the items that are easy to make and then the complicated ones as the next.

Woodworking and Kids

Teaching kids woodworking is a fun and rewarding project, but safety should always be the key

factor. Safety glasses, gloves and hearing protection should always be worn, especially by kids. There are many books available that talk about how to teach a kid woodworking, but many believe that the best way to teach a kid how to do anything is to let them watch, then have them try.

Kids enjoy doing things with adults, especially building things. First, the child must understand the basic safety rules and of course you must explain to them that they have to wear the safety equipment. Next, choose a simple project that will be easy for the child to complete. Don’t choose a large, extravagant cabinet that will take days and perhaps months to complete. Children do not have that long of an attention span and will lose interest before the project is complete.

A good idea for a first project to teach kids woodworking is a set of book ends. In most cases, each end is two pieces of wood. They can shape and decorate the pieces in any way they wish. Another slightly more advanced project is a birdhouse or bird feeder. These two projects have a few more pieces that must be fitted together, taking a bit longer to produce.

The important thing to remember when teaching a kid woodworking is that they may not understand the tools, so take it slow and make sure that they understand things. Don’t rush them through. Select a project, get a pattern, gather the tools and materials and get to work. Kids really love to create things, so help them create something fantastic.

Still another great source for free woodworking plans is your local library. There are literally millions of books available on woodworking and woodworking projects. Your librarian can help you find these. In some cases, they may allow you to copy the patterns out of the books right there at the library. In other cases, you may need to check out the book and make your own copy. When doing this, make sure you check the copyright information so that you do not get in trouble for copying something that you shouldn’t.

Make your first woodworking project easy

You have decided you want to try to build something from wood. Now you just need to figure

out what you would like to create, how much money you are willing to spend and how long you have to work on it. For a beginner, it is best to start out with a smaller project such as a table, simple shelf or bird house. Not many fancy curves and bends, just straight corners and a smooth finish.

Finding a plan for a woodworking project for a beginner is actually quite easy. Looking online for free plans, scouting your local home improvement store or checking out the library are three very easy ways to find plans suitable to your skill level. Many beginners want to build something beautiful right away. Unfortunately, highly detailed, large projects take a lot of skill and a lot of time to accomplish.

It is best to start out small, build your skill level gradually and have a couple successes before you attempt a huge masterpiece that will be envied by all. When selecting your plans, you need to have a vision of what you wish to build. Not just a general outline, but the details too. Exactly what you want the project to look like. With this vision in your mind, start scouting the resources and find that perfect project that you want to build.

woodworking as a hobby will often make household items such as cabinets, tables, and chairs. Others like to use their woodworking skills to create works of art. There are a variety of ways a person who is just starting out can learn and develop the necessary skills to get started.

In order to be successful at woodworking, a person must have an eye for detail. Sculpting wood also requires precision and patience. A beginner can start to get a feel for woodworking by reading books and articles on the subject. Just remember that it takes much more than reading to truly master this craft.

One way to develop an understanding for woodworking is to closely observe existing creations made from wood. A person who lives in an older home can gain a wealth of knowledge by analyzing wooden door frames, stairs, and bookcases. This is a good way discover the style and techniques of woodwork from earlier times. Some of those methods are still presently used.

Another way to get started is to take a course in woodworking. Start by looking in the phone book or on the internet for local classes. Visit a local hardware store and see if the manager has any suggestions. Some stores that sell hardware supplies even offer free workshops.

Tips for teaching your kids woodworking

Woodworking is a great hobby to get involved in and an even better one to pass on to your

kids. It gives them a great sense of accomplishment being able to make something out of a simple piece of wood. However, since extremely sharp equipment is being used and children are present, the need to be safe can not be stressed enough. Here are a few simple hints for teaching kids woodworking.

Make something that appeals to kids, or that they will enjoy. Woodworking comes in many different styles and result in countless projects, but while although you may enjoy building furniture and benches, a kids may not find it so enthralling. However, by making the pattern very simple and easily accomplished in a day or two, it may be much more enjoyable.

On a side note, if you will be making furniture or other projects that require pieces of wood, the adult should cut the pieces by themselves and allow the kids to put it together and possibly paint it. Also, make the patterns simple and fun. For example, if you are teaching scroll sawing, then let them cut out their favorite cartoon character to paint later.

Be safe. Depending on the age of the kid you are teaching, many machines should be handled only by adults, or very closely supervised such as a table saw or most hand held saws or power tools that may be too heavy for kids. And always have them wear goggles.

The most important thing is keeping them involved in every step of the project, from designing to building it.

Basic tools to get started in woodworking

Every woodworker knows that there are certain tools that are absolutely essential to finishing

a woodworking project. For a beginner however, the choices seem confusing and expensive. A few of the essential tools of a woodworking shop include a woodworking bench, preferably with a vice, a good portable saw, a portable table, saw horses for working on big projects, a place to store your tools, a place for nails and other fasteners and small parts, some clamps to hold together those projects requiring glue, a broom or vacuum for clean up, a few jigs and of course a hammer and probably a drill.

Some of these may not be obvious in the beginning, but it is best to have a clean up system in place for when you are finished working on the project. A broom or vacuum for sawdust and shavings will help keep your woodworking area clean and prevent fires. An extra table will give you more space to work. A vice will help you hold the wood while you are shaping or fastening some pieces today or even sanding.

Quality tools are expensive, but replacing tools that didn’t cost very much can become just as expensive in the long run not to mention that it is very frustrating to start working on a project only to have to stop to replace a tool. You may want to consider spending a little extra on the saw and drill to ensure that they last for a while. Quality hand tools are important for safety as well. Hammers should be secure and easy to hold to prevent injuries and ensure a quality finish on your project.

Ideas for deciding on a woodworking project

There are so many things that can be made from wood. Woodworking plans can be expensive,

or they can be free. Searching on the internet is a great way to find many free woodworking plans. Other places where you may find free woodworking patterns are in many magazines or home improvement stores.

When looking for a particular set of plans, first search online for free, down loadable and printable patterns. You need to use some judgment on these plans, checking for material requirements and things such as that. Some patterns call for far too much material to be purchased because a new board is cut each time there is a new piece cut when in actuality one piece of board could be used for several pieces of the project.

Knowing what you have in mind, you may browse through magazines. Self help magazines, decorating magazines, as well as landscaping or woodworking magazines often contain patterns and plans for projects that are in the magazine at that time.

Many home improvement stores offer weekend clinics. These clinics are intended to help people learn to do things themselves. In today’s economy, many people are finding that out of necessity they can’t just call a carpenter or a plumber, they have to learn to do it themselves. While offering many self help clinics, they also offer woodworking or building clinics. During these clinics there are often many free patterns to be picked up. Some plans can be picked up at any time. During the springtime, some stores offer displays and then provide the plans and patterns so you can build your own.

Ideas for woodworking projects

Woodworking ideas come in every imaginable shape and size. From a simple bookcase to an

extravagant cabinet or dresser, there are literally thousands of projects that you can make with wood. Toys, beds, benches, cabinets and shelves, you can find almost any pattern that you choose to make.

Once you’ve decided on a project, you will need to find a pattern or plan. Many patterns are available online for free and you can also purchase patterns online and in many craft stores or even lumber stores. Some projects are available as a kit as well.

The project you choose will likely depend on your skill level, the amount of time you want to invest in the project and budget for the project. Children especially like to build with wood because it is a simple material for a child to work with.

For some, woodworking is a hobby while for others it is a business. For example, making wooden toys for children could be just a rewarding experience or it could be a very profitable business. Many small toys can be fashioned out of a small bit of wood that may have been left over from another project. Making wooden blocks which are later sanded and painted is an inexpensive project that could be rewarding and profitable.

Many toys that are today made from plastic were once made from wood. Wooden cars, trains, blocks, and other carved projects have been restructured into a molded plastic. Children, especially younger ones, really enjoy the hands on of building their own toys or even watching someone else do it for them.

Many woodworking plans can be found online and offline. Find a project that you like and get started! It can be that easy.

Woodworking Tools

Editor's note: For more information on hand tools, be sure to visit the section of our store that is dedicated to hand tools. Click here .

When setting up shop, probably the last place you should search for the tools you need is in a tool catalog. The catalogs and supply stores are clogged with an array of tools, jigs and other equipment that all look absolutely essential.

The Best Woodworking Plans Are Found Here

Truth is, most of those tools are essential, but just not for every shop and every woodworker. The core list of tools you need to build furniture is actually pretty small.
We set out to develop our own list of “must-have” tools for a shop that blends hand and power tools, but we quickly discovered that someone had already done the job for us – and done it well.

The late Charles H. Hayward was a 20th-century woodworking writer who had been traditionally trained in professional English shops when both hand and power tools were common. Hayward wrote many classics, including “Woodwork Joints,” “Cabinetmaking for Beginners” and “English Period Furniture.” He also was the editor of England’s Woodworker Magazine.

All of his books are out of print, though they are easy to find used on the Internet.

One of Hayward’s best books, “Tools for Woodwork,” explains how to use most basic hand tools and hand-held power tools. At the back of that book is a “suggested kit for the man taking up woodwork seriously.” We’ve decided to print his basic list and illustration (at right) with our commentary following each entry. Plus, we’ve included a list of what we consider to be the essential and recommended power tools.

The Preliminary Tool Kit
These are the hand tools Hayward says you should purchase before you cut your first stick of wood. The numbers before each entry correspond with the numbers in the illustration. Download the pdf at the end of this article for the full-size illustration.

1. Crosscut handsaw, 22": This is technically a panel saw. It is useful for breaking down large planks  you before flatten them.

2. Backsaw, 10": Presumably a carcase saw and filed crosscut, this tool will make your finishing cuts and is typically used with the bench hook.

3. Dovetail saw, 8": We prefer a 15-point saw that is filed for ripping cuts.

7. Jack plane: Hayward seems to prefer this plane for processing rough lumber. A 14"-long plane is typical.

8. Fore plane: Hayward seems to prefer this size plane (about 18") for shooting the edges of boards instead of a jointer plane.

9. Smoothing plane: The smoothing plane is the last plane to touch the work before scrapers or sandpaper. A 10"-long plane is a typical size.

15. Firmer chisels, 1/4" and 3/4": These were once common tools without the beveled edges that are comm...

Shop-Built Woodworking Jigs

Table Saw Jointer Jig

The jointer is a tool that is designed to provide a smooth, flat edge on one long edge of a board. From this straight edge, you can then create a parallel edge on the opposite side with your table saw. In most cases, though, you don't need an expensive jointer to create the first edge; instead, you can use a jointer jig on a table saw to create the same flat, smooth edge. Learn how to build a table saw jointer jig in these step-by-step instructions.
