LJ’s

I’ve been walking around with this idea for some time now. I decided to make a rather smaller version than the one in my head and see how it turns out. I’m starting on number 2 next week !!!

It’s about 500mm high.

I don’t know a proper name for this project : Any suggestions ?

This one will be sold , the money goes to a charity named KIKA.

Try Digital with a Free Project

Unless you've been hiding in a cave, you've likely heard that print is dead and digital is the new reality. That may be a slight exaggeration as I, for one, still enjoy turning pages. However, there is no doubt that whatever the future holds, we will be consuming information in many new forms - and that is a good thing. Whether you've purchased a Kindle, I-Pad or are just using your computer to read (I'm old enough to admit that magnification on screen is handy...) digital reading is entering our world at break-neck speed.

The advantages are many: You have access to a staggering amount of immediately-available information at your fingertips. Storing all your favorite projects requires a simple folder on whatever reading device you prefer, rather than file drawers and shelves stacked with old magazines. If you're looking to build a particular side-table project, you can buy the book or magazine the plan came from (if they are still available). Or you can log-on to a web site that has hundreds of project plans available for quick download. There's a very good chance you can even select from a variety of side-table plans to pick the project that best suits your needs. Handy, quick and affordable.

As a company, we will be increasing our digital plans and articles extensively over the next few months, offering you a broad selection of affordable (and quick) topics and projects. If you've never worked from a digital plan, we'd like to give you a free $7 plan to test. It's one of my favorites, and every shop should have one of these tool boxes for all those small items that are always getting lost. To download the plan, simply follow the link below.

Be safe when building a wood project

Woodworking is a very rewarding, hands on craft that can produce beautiful projects. Safety

should always be the number one thing that a woodworker is thinking about. When you practice safe working habits in the woodworking shop, you can avoid accidents.

Many times accidents can happen because of a cluttered area. Keep your area free from clutter, especially where you will be walking and carrying pieces and also near saws and other equipment with moving parts. Wear clothing that is close to the body, not dangling at the arm for example. A loose piece of clothing can get caught in a moving blade and force the body into the blade, causing extreme cuts or worse.

Do not wear jewelry when working with woodworking tools. Jewelry too can become entangled in the moving parts and cause serious injuries. Of course, eye protection is very important as well. Sawdust and other particles can get into your eyes, causing you to be unable to see for a period of time which can lead to an accident as well.

Hearing protection around saws and drills will help save your hearing. Also, when hammering hearing protection will help reduce the noise and save your hearing. Use a single plug in if you are using multiple tools. This prevents you from accidentally turning on a tool that you are not using. Unplug the one you are finished with and plug in the one you need next.

Make sure your equipment is in good working condition. A hammer with a loose head may come apart while you are hammering, striking you or a person nearby. Tools such as saw blades and drill bits should be kept sharp. A sharp tool cuts easier than a dull one. With a dull tool you may need to push the wood through, risking a slip and causing an injury.

Make your first woodworking project easy

You have decided you want to try to build something from wood. Now you just need to figure

out what you would like to create, how much money you are willing to spend and how long you have to work on it. For a beginner, it is best to start out with a smaller project such as a table, simple shelf or bird house. Not many fancy curves and bends, just straight corners and a smooth finish.

Finding a plan for a woodworking project for a beginner is actually quite easy. Looking online for free plans, scouting your local home improvement store or checking out the library are three very easy ways to find plans suitable to your skill level. Many beginners want to build something beautiful right away. Unfortunately, highly detailed, large projects take a lot of skill and a lot of time to accomplish.

It is best to start out small, build your skill level gradually and have a couple successes before you attempt a huge masterpiece that will be envied by all. When selecting your plans, you need to have a vision of what you wish to build. Not just a general outline, but the details too. Exactly what you want the project to look like. With this vision in your mind, start scouting the resources and find that perfect project that you want to build.

Once you have found that perfect plan, now you must gather the materials and tools needed to produce that item. As always, make sure that you are using the proper safety gear as well. Safety goggles, gloves, hearing protection and perhaps an apron may be appropriate, depending on the project.

Ideas for deciding on a woodworking project

There are so many things that can be made from wood. Woodworking plans can be expensive,

or they can be free. Searching on the internet is a great way to find many free woodworking plans. Other places where you may find free woodworking patterns are in many magazines or home improvement stores.

When looking for a particular set of plans, first search online for free, down loadable and printable patterns. You need to use some judgment on these plans, checking for material requirements and things such as that. Some patterns call for far too much material to be purchased because a new board is cut each time there is a new piece cut when in actuality one piece of board could be used for several pieces of the project.

Knowing what you have in mind, you may browse through magazines. Self help magazines, decorating magazines, as well as landscaping or woodworking magazines often contain patterns and plans for projects that are in the magazine at that time.

Many home improvement stores offer weekend clinics. These clinics are intended to help people learn to do things themselves. In today’s economy, many people are finding that out of necessity they can’t just call a carpenter or a plumber, they have to learn to do it themselves. While offering many self help clinics, they also offer woodworking or building clinics. During these clinics there are often many free patterns to be picked up. Some plans can be picked up at any time. During the springtime, some stores offer displays and then provide the plans and patterns so you can build your own.

My First Scroll Saw Project

My two sons gave me a Delta scroll saw for Christmas and this is my first project using it. An amazing tool and lots of fun. The picture is of my younger son on his wedding day three years ago. It is going to be hard for me to wait for an occasion to give it to them.
